Topping up with AdBlue®
-
How often should I top up with AdBlue®?
Just like your fuel consumption, your AdBlue® consumption is affected by a number of factors: the vehicle type, the type of engine, the vehicle load, the outdoor conditions, your driving style, etc. Also, since the capacity of the tank varies between vehicles, the frequency at which you need to top up depends mainly on the vehicle.
Heavy goods vehicles are equipped with a gauge showing how much AdBlue® is left in the tank. Light vehicles have a visual warning light on the dashboard that comes on when the vehicle can still cover 2,400km, showing that it is time to think about topping up. -
Can I top up with AdBlue® myself?
Yes, you can top up with AdBlue® yourself. Every TotalEnergies service station sells standard 5L and 10L cans of AdBlue®. TotalEnergies is also gradually deploying special pumps for light vehicles.
Never top up with a pump for heavy goods vehicles. The high flow rate of these pumps is not at all suited to light vehicle tanks. -
If I top up with AdBlue® myself, is there a danger of annulling the manufacturer’s warranty of my vehicle?
No. As long as you use a product that meets the ISO 22241 standard, you will keep your warranty, no matter who tops up the tank. If you use an AdBlue®-branded product, then you are in no danger of annulling your warranty.

Can I top up with a pump for heavy goods vehicles?
The particular features of AdBlue® pumps for heavy goods vehicles make them unusable on light vehicles. The AdBlue® tank openings on light vehicles are not adapted to the magnetised end piece of the AdBlue® pumps for heavy goods vehicles, nor to the high flow rate of these pumps.
Light vehicles must always be topped up using the pumps specially for light vehicles or the cans on sale in the store. -
What happens if I forget to top up with AdBlue® ?
The regulations applying to all vehicles require the first warning to appear 2,400km before running dry, irrespective of the make or model.
If you do not top up, other warnings will appear, according to the distance covered and the number of engine restarts. Initially, these warnings are visual and/or audible, then the vehicle’s electronics will gradually limit the performance of the engine. The final step of the process consists of immobilising the vehicle and preventing the engine from being started without topping up with AdBlue®.
One final point must be taken into consideration: never pour the AdBlue® into the fuel tank, and never put diesel in the AdBlue®s tank.
If in doubt, go to a TotalEnergies service station and ask the station staff to help you to top up, so that any problems are avoided.
