Discover our tips on how to use AdBlue® in BMW vehicles
Capacity, range, operation… Find out everything you need to know about using AdBlue® in your BMW vehicle.
In an effort to reduce the NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions from its models, BMW today installs a catalyst that evacuates these harmful particles in the diesel engines of all its new vehicles. In addition to this device, certain models are equipped with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that uses AdBlue®.
BMW and AdBlue®: what is the capacity of my tank?
The capacity of your BMW’s AdBlue® tank depends on the model. The tank, located next to the fuel tank or in the engine compartment, can contain between 12 and 15 litres of AdBlue®.
What is the AdBlue® range of my BMW?
A BMW can usually cover about 15,000km on one tank of AdBlue®. However, this value may be lower, depending on your driving style.

When must I top up the AdBlue® tank in my BMW?
A warning appears on the dashboard when you need to top up with AdBlue® in 2,400km. Your vehicle can also permanently display the distance remaining before you need to top up with AdBlue®. Refer to the Vehicle Information > Vehicle Status > AdBlue® chapter in the driver’s handbook.
Remember to fill up your AdBlue® tank in time! Once the tank is empty, your vehicle will simply no longer start. |
Follow these two precautions when topping up with AdBlue®:
- always use AdBlue® that meets the ISO 22241-1 standard to be sure that the SCR system works properly,
- even if AdBlue® is considered to be a harmless product, it can cause irritation. If the AdBlue® comes into contact with your skin, rinse thoroughly in water.
