Discover our tips on how to use AdBlue® in Mercedes vehicles
Mercedes uses different technologies to make its diesel vehicles cleaner. One of these technologies, SCR, requires the use of AdBlue®. We explain how to use this product in your vehicle.
Like many other carmakers, Mercedes is striving to reduce the polluting emissions produced by its diesel vehicles. To do this, the German carmaker uses two technologies:
- EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) technology, which recycles exhaust fumes by collecting them at the exhaust outlet and re-injecting them into the admission,
- the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, which injects AdBlue® into a catalytic converter to turn the particularly harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) into harmless elements.
Does my Mercedes use AdBlue®?
All Mercedes vehicles that use the BlueTEC technology are equipped with an SCR system that requires AdBlue®.
If in doubt, contact your dealer or refer to you vehicle owner’s handbook to make sure.
What is the capacity of the AdBlue® tank in my Mercedes?
The capacity of the AdBlue® tank in your Mercedes vehicle depends on the model. Usually, the tanks are large, with a capacity of up to 25 litres.
When must I fill up the AdBlue® tank in my Mercedes?
You must never allow the AdBlue® tank to run completely dry. In this case, your vehicle will not start.
A warning message appears on the dashboard of your car when there are only 3 litres of AdBlue® left in the tank. If you do not fill up the AdBlue® tank at this point, another message is displayed, showing the number of kilometres you can drive before the car will no longer start.
If you still allow the AdBlue® tank to run completely dry, you will have to put at least 3 litres of AdBlue® in the tank in order to restart your vehicle. On Mercedes vehicles, the AdBlue® tank filler cap is usually next to the fuel filler cap.
Never put AdBlue® in the fuel tank, as doing so can cause serious damage to the engine! Never add any other additives to the AdBlue®. |
