Check out all our tips to understand and use AdBlue® in Volkswagen vehicles
Volkswagen uses the SCR system in its diesel vehicles. This system uses AdBlue® to eliminate nitrogen oxides from exhaust fumes. Here are our answers to the questions you might ask about using this product in your vehicle.
Reducing polluting emissions from diesel vehicles has become a top priority for many carmakers. The European standards applying to emissions have become increasingly strict. One of the solutions developed by carmakers is the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, consisting of a catalytic converter, into which AdBlue® is injected in order to eliminate harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) particles.
Does my Volkswagen model use AdBlue®?
All the recent diesel models made by Volkswagen are equipped with SCR technology, which uses AdBlue®. Refer to your car owner’s handbook or directly contact your dealer to find out whether your vehicle is recent enough to be equipped with this technology.
What is the capacity of the AdBlue® tank in my Volkswagen?
The capacity of the AdBlue® tank in your Volkswagen vehicle depends on the model. It will have a capacity of between 11 and 19 litres. Here are some examples:
- VW Passat: 13 litres,
- VW Tiguan: 12 litres,
- VW Touran: 11 litres,
- VW Sharan: 16 litres,
- VW Touareg: 19.5 litres.
Your Volkswagen consumes between 1.5 and 2.8 litres of AdBlue® per 1,000 kilometres. You can calculate the distance you can drive on a tank of AdBlue® on the basis of the size of the tank in your VW model.
How can I know when the AdBlue® tank in my Volkswagen needs to be topped up?
A message will appear on the dashboard when your vehicle’s AdBlue® tank is running low. This message will appear at two different points:
- when you can drive for another 2,400km,
- when you can drive for another 1.000 km.
It is very important to fill up the AdBlue® tank before it runs completely dry. Once the tank is empty, your vehicle will no longer start. You will have to put a few litres of AdBlue® in the tank in order to set off again. |
How to top up the AdBlue® tank in your Volkswagen
You can buy cans of AdBlue® in most service stations. Make sure you always put the AdBlue® in its special tank, and not in the fuel tank. On Volkswagen vehicles, this special tank is:
- next to the fuel tank filler cap,
- in the engine compartment,
- in the boot.
AdBlue® is a harmless product, but it can cause irritations. If you splash AdBlue® onto your skin or clothes, rinse them in water.
